Diesel to LNG Conversion for Mining Fleets - FAQs

Is there any impact on engine durability when switching to gas?

The engine always operates within OEM limits, such as exhaust gas temperature, boost pressure, and air temperature. When gas is combusted, unlike diesel no solid particles are left over from the combustion process enabling cleaner operation requiring equivalent or lower maintenance. Engine power when operating on gas is comparable to diesel operations.

What is the maximum percentage of LNG allowed to be mixed with diesel?

Theoretically, a maximum 70% gas substitution rate or diesel displacement rate (DDR) is technically possible at 80% load. For mining operations, the overall average substitution rate is about 35-40%. The exact diesel displacement percentage depends on the duty cycle of the mine trucks, temperature of LNG during loading and engine health of the mine truck.

How much LNG is needed to replace one liter of diesel?

1.6 times. The calculation would be based on cost per energy per kcal/BTU. We can support customers in this calculation if required.

Does LNG storage have any operating temperature limits?

There is no impact of ambient temperature on Onsite LNG Storage or on Onboard LNG Storage system. The technology is designed to operate in both very high and very low ambient temperatures. LNG storage tanks are double walled storage tanks.

When gas mixes with air, is the pre-mix lean or rich?

The Air Gas Mixture is so lean that it would not combust even in the presence of an active flame.

If the air-gas mixture is so lean, how does it burn the combustion chamber?

The pressure of the Air Gas Mixture is increased during the compression stroke and the presence of a pilot fuel (diesel) allows the Air Gas Mixture to stroke.

Is LNG a clean fuel?

LNG is considered a clean fuel due to its high purity and its ability to burn entirely without residue. Switching to LNG can lead to an average 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from total hydrocarbon combustion.

What is the payback period for LNG substitution?

The payback period varies based on factors such as the price difference between delivered LNG and diesel, running hours, and the type and size of the truck(s).

Is LNG supply or storage within Energeia's scope?

LNG supply and storage is not supplied by Energeia. We do have partners, we can connect customers to these items.

Are there any success stories or case studies?

Our technology has been tested and developed in collaboration with GFS Corp. It has been tested on KOMATSU Proving Grounds in the USA. Applications include mining companies in the US, South America, and Russia.
